Most Common Dorm Questions & Concerns (Answered) I’ve helped a lot of students—my brothers’ friends, and now people from CUA and UMD—choose the right dorm setup. It’s kind of funny that most people are asking the same exact questions. So I thought it might be helpful to create a quick list of the most common dorm concerns I’ve heard along with the honest answers I typically provide

1. What do I really need to bring to my dorm? Bring only those things that you are sure to use on a daily basis. A few good tools, decent lighting, underbed storage, and a simple shower setup are enough. Don’t buy the weird gadgets or the TikTok ‘dorm must haves’ that are never really used.

2. What is something that a lot of people tend to forget? A plunger, I’m not even kidding, you’re going to thank me later. Also: a small toolkit, more command strips, and a better power strip. And if you are in a building with thin walls: some kind of white noise solution.

 3. How do I stop my room from being so depressing? Lighting is key. Change the overhead light to a warm lamp or LED strip. Add a rug, or even just a soft throw. A plant (even if it’s a fake one) will help to make your room look less like a hospital or cell number 324.

 4. What if I have no space at all? It’s all about vertical storage. There are over-the-door hooks, shelves, and even stacking bins that can give you more space than you thought possible. Also—get rid of things that you think you might need but never use. If you don’t use it by week 3, it’s probably just clutter.

5. What if my roommate is messy? This one’s tricky. My best advice: have a clear system and lead by example. Make sure your side of the room is efficient and runs like clockwork. If you have to talk about shared spaces (like the bathroom or kitchen), keep it cool and focus on solutions instead.
